How does a mud pump work?

The mud pump is one of the essential components of the drilling fluid circulation system. During the drilling process, it injects mud into the wellbore along with the drill bit, serving multiple functions such as cooling the drill bit, cleaning the drilling tools, stabilizing the wellbore walls, driving the drilling tools to rotate, and transmitting torque. The working process of the mud pump is outlined below:

1. Suction Process: When the impeller rotates, a low-pressure area is created on the inlet side, causing the mud to be sucked in. Under the centrifugal force generated by the rotating impeller, the mud, and water are thrown out of the impeller and flow through the volute-shaped pump casing into the discharge pipeline of the pump.
2. Discharge Process: As the impeller continues to rotate, the sucked-in mud is thrown towards the outer edges of the impeller channels by centrifugal force. It converges there and is then discharged outside the pump along the volute passageway.

Additionally, during the operation of the mud pump, a power source, typically an electric motor, drives the worm and impeller to rotate via the pump shaft. The vanes inside the impeller force the mud to rotate, increasing its energy, velocity, and pressure. Under the influence of centrifugal force, the mud is thrown toward the perimeter of the impeller along the vane passageways and is discharged outside the pump through the volute-shaped pump casing.
