Hammer Union Construction

A complete Hammer Union consists of four primary elements.

Male Sub

The male sub provides:

  • Male sealing nose
  • Internal full-bore flow passage
  • Threaded or butt-weld pipe end
  • Axial connection shoulder
  • Seal-contact surface
  • Permanent size and pressure marking

The male nose enters the female sub and aligns the internal flow path.

Female Sub

The female sub provides:

  • Female sealing cavity
  • Wing-nut engagement area
  • Internal pressure-seal location
  • Threaded or butt-weld pipe end
  • Full-bore flow passage
  • Pressure-containing connection shoulder

The female sub receives the male nose and supports the selected seal arrangement.

Wing Nut

The wing nut connects the male and female subs.

Its main features include:

  • Forged alloy-steel construction
  • Two- or three-lug hammer profile
  • Rigid ACME internal threads
  • High axial load capacity
  • Permanent figure and pressure markings
  • Pressure-class color identification

Hammer blows applied to the external lugs rotate the nut and draw the two union subs together.

Seal Ring

The seal forms the primary pressure barrier in pressure-seal union designs.

Available sealing elements include:

  • O-rings
  • Lip-type pressure seals
  • Metal-to-metal sealing noses
  • H₂S-compatible elastomer seals
  • High-temperature seal rings
  • Low-temperature seal rings

The seal profile and material are matched to the union figure, fluid and operating temperature.

Threaded Hammer Unions

Threaded Hammer Unions connect directly to threaded oilfield pipe, valves, manifolds and pressure fittings.

Available thread preparations include:

  • API line-pipe threads
  • Tubing threads
  • Project-specific oilfield threads
  • Female threaded union subs
  • Male threaded union subs
  • Threaded blind unions

Threaded configurations provide:

  • Rapid equipment assembly
  • Compact installation
  • Easy component replacement
  • Reduced field welding
  • Reusable modular flowline layouts

Each thread is inspected using calibrated gauges for taper, lead, pitch diameter, crest and root geometry.

Butt-Weld Hammer Unions

Butt-Weld Hammer Unions are welded directly into pup joints, elbows, swivel joints, manifolds and high-pressure straight pipes.

The weld-end design includes:

  • Controlled outside diameter
  • Controlled inside diameter
  • Machined weld bevel
  • Specified root face
  • Defined included angle

  • Complete welded manifold assembly

Welded assemblies use qualified welding procedures, controlled preheat and post-weld inspection.

H₂S-Service Hammer Unions

H₂S-service unions are manufactured for sour oil, sour gas and well-service fluids containing hydrogen sulfide.

The sour-service configuration includes:

  • Controlled-hardness pressure-containing materials

Hammer Union Sealing Systems

Metal-to-Metal Seal

Low-pressure and general-service unions use precision-machined metallic contact surfaces to establish the main sealing interface.

Metal-to-metal sealing provides:

  • Simple construction
  • Rapid assembly
  • Resistance to seal displacement
  • Compatibility with general fluid service
  • Easy inspection and cleaning

O-Ring Seal

An O-ring installed in the male or female sub improves sealing and protects the metallic contact surfaces from corrosion and erosion.

Available O-ring materials include:

  • NBR
  • HNBR
  • FKM
  • Low-temperature elastomer
  • Sour-service elastomer

Lip-Type Pressure Seal

High-pressure Fig 602, Fig 1002, Fig 1502 and Fig 2002 unions use replaceable lip-type pressure seals.

Internal pressure energizes the seal lips against the male and female sealing surfaces.

The lip-type design provides:

  • High-pressure sealing
  • Protection of the union threads
  • Reduced fluid contact with metallic seating surfaces
  • Easy field replacement
  • Compatibility with standard and sour-service fluids

Materials

Union Subs

Male and female subs are manufactured from forged high-strength alloy steel, including:

  • AISI 4130
  • AISI 4140
  • Equivalent quenched-and-tempered alloy steel

The material provides:

  • High tensile strength
  • High yield strength
  • Impact toughness
  • Fatigue resistance
  • Pressure-cycle resistance
  • Stable heat-treatment response

Wing Nut

The wing nut uses high-strength forged alloy steel with controlled toughness and hardness.

The forging process creates continuous material flow around the lugs and thread body, improving resistance to impact and axial loading.

Seal Materials

Available seal materials include:

  • NBR for standard oilfield fluids
  • HNBR for heat, oil and H₂S resistance
  • FKM for elevated temperature and aggressive chemicals
  • Low-temperature elastomers for cold environments
  • Engineered polymer seals for severe pressure service

Full-Bore Flow Passage

The male and female subs are machined to create a continuous internal flow path.

A controlled full-bore passage provides:

  • Reduced pressure loss
  • Lower turbulence
  • Improved slurry transport
  • Reduced local erosion
  • Easier flushing
  • Reduced solids accumulation
  • Stable high-rate pumping

The internal transition is inspected for bore alignment, surface condition and dimensional accuracy.

Fast Field Connection

The wing nut and ACME thread allow the connection to be made up rapidly.

The installation sequence includes:

  1. Clean the male and female subs.
  2. Inspect the sealing surfaces.
  3. Install the correct seal ring.
  4. Insert the male sub into the female sub.
  5. Engage the wing nut.
  6. Rotate the nut by hand.
  7. Apply controlled hammer blows to the lugs.
  8. Verify full connection engagement.
  9. Pressure-test the completed flowline.

The connection does not require flange studs, torque wrenches or complex alignment tools.

Figure and Pressure Identification

Every Goldenman Hammer Union carries permanent markings identifying:

  • Nominal size
  • Union figure
  • Rated working pressure
  • Connection type
  • Standard- or sour-service designation
  • Material heat number
  • Product batch or serial number

Pressure-specific color coding supports rapid visual identification in the field.

Forged markings remain the primary product-identification method after painting and field use.

Applications

Goldenman Hammer Unions are used in:

  • Hydraulic fracturing systems
  • Cementing manifolds
  • Acidizing lines
  • Choke manifolds
  • Kill manifolds
  • Mud manifolds
  • Standpipe manifolds
  • Pump-discharge lines
  • Well-testing packages
  • Flowback manifolds
  • Production-test equipment

  • Nitrogen-pumping systems
  • Water-injection systems
  • Drilling-fluid circulation
  • Temporary high-pressure piping
  • High-pressure hoses

Connection Compatibility

Hammer Union compatibility is determined by:

  • Nominal size
  • Union figure
  • Thread form
  • Male nose profile
  • Female sealing cavity
  • Wing-nut thread
  • Pressure-seal geometry
  • Standard- or sour-service rating

Two components with the same nominal size are not automatically compatible when their Figure numbers differ.

A Fig 1002 component does not connect directly to a Fig 1502 component.

Mixed-Figure systems use engineered adapters carrying the pressure rating of the lowest-rated component.

  • Confirm standard or H₂S service.
  • Inspect the male sealing nose.
  • Inspect the female sealing cavity.

  • Inspect the wing-nut lugs.
  • Install the correct seal ring.
  • Clean all connection surfaces.
  • Align the piping without side load.
  • Support long or heavy flowline sections.
  • Install flowline restraints.
  • Complete the required pressure test.

The union must not be used to pull misaligned piping into position.

  • Wing-nut lug damage
  • Male nose damage
  • Female sealing-cavity damage
  • Seal cuts or deformation
