Description

Goldenman SRE Series Sucker Rod Elevators are load-bearing hoisting tools designed for running, pulling and handling sucker rods during oil-well servicing, pump maintenance and production workover operations.

The series includes:

  • SRE20: rated load of 20 short tons
  • SRE25: rated load of 25 short tons

Available rod-size configurations cover diameters from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches.

Size-specific rod plates allow the elevator to be configured for different sucker rod diameters while maintaining the correct lifting interface and rod support geometry.

Each elevator must be selected according to the actual rod diameter, lifting profile, maximum suspended rod-string weight, elevator-link interface, required Product Specification Level and operating environment.

Goldenman manufactures SRE Sucker Rod Elevators according to the applicable current edition of API Standard 8C, subject to the company’s active licensed product scope and the approved model configuration.

Product Short Description

Goldenman SRE20 and SRE25 Sucker Rod Elevators provide a compact lifting connection between the hoisting system and sucker rod string during well servicing and production operations.

The elevator body uses size-specific rod plates to accommodate different rod diameters. Front and rear release controls provide access for opening, closing and releasing the elevator during repetitive rod-handling cycles.

SRE20 covers the broadest rod-size range, while SRE25 provides a higher rated load for commonly used 5/8–1 in sucker rod sizes.

What Is a Sucker Rod Elevator?

A Sucker Rod Elevator is a load-bearing handling tool used to lift and suspend sucker rods during installation, removal and maintenance of a rod-pumping system.

It is normally suspended from a compatible sucker rod hook, elevator links or an approved well-service hoisting arrangement.

The elevator closes around the selected rod handling area. A size-specific plate provides the required opening and supports the approved rod lifting profile.

During operation, the load path passes through:

  1. Sucker rod or approved rod lifting shoulder
  2. Size-specific rod plate
  3. Elevator body
  4. Elevator suspension interface
  5. Hook or link arrangement
  6. Hoisting system

The elevator must not support the rod on exposed threads, damaged shoulders or an incorrectly sized plate.

Main Applications

Goldenman SRE Sucker Rod Elevators can be used for:

  • Running sucker rods
  • Pulling sucker rods
  • Rod-string installation
  • Rod-string removal
  • Rod-pump maintenance
  • Workover operations
  • Production-well servicing
  • Sucker rod replacement
  • Well rehabilitation
  • Pump inspection and repair
  • Land-based service rigs
  • Mobile workover units
  • Offshore production-well servicing
  • Replacement of existing SRE-style elevators

The elevator is intended for sucker rod handling and should not automatically be used for tubing, casing, drill pipe or polished rods without an approved interface review.

Model and Size Range

Model Applicable Rod Diameters Metric Reference Sizes Rated Load
SRE20 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 1, 1-1/8, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 in 12.7, 15.9, 19.1, 22.2, 25.4, 28.6, 31.8 and 38.1 mm 20 short tons
SRE25 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and 1 in 15.9, 19.1, 22.2 and 25.4 mm 25 short tons

The model table describes the available elevator and rod-plate configurations.

It should not be interpreted to mean that one installed plate automatically adjusts across the complete size range.

Each rod diameter requires a compatible plate and approved lifting interface.

SRE20 Model

The SRE20 provides the broadest size coverage in the Goldenman SRE range.

Available size configurations include:

  • 1/2 in
  • 5/8 in
  • 3/4 in
  • 7/8 in
  • 1 in
  • 1-1/8 in
  • 1-1/4 in
  • 1-1/2 in

Its rated load is 20 short tons.

The SRE20 may be selected when:

  • The well program includes multiple sucker rod sizes
  • Smaller-diameter rods must be handled
  • Sinker bars or larger rod sections require a compatible plate
  • The operation requires one elevator family with several plate options
  • The maximum suspended load remains within the approved 20-ton rating

The exact plate number and lifting interface must be confirmed for each rod size.

SRE25 Model

The SRE25 is the higher-capacity model in the current range.

Available size configurations include:

  • 5/8 in
  • 3/4 in
  • 7/8 in
  • 1 in

Its rated load is 25 short tons.

The SRE25 may be selected for:

  • Heavier sucker rod strings
  • Deeper production wells
  • Common sucker rod sizes from 5/8 to 1 in
  • Workover operations requiring additional rated-load capacity
  • Replacement of an existing SRE25 elevator

A 25-ton model should not be selected solely because it has a higher capacity. The rod plate, lifting profile and hook interface must also match the intended operation.

Rated Load Is Not Rated Torque

The existing Goldenman table incorrectly labels the 20- and 25-short-ton values as:

Rated Torque

The correct term is:

Rated Load

A Sucker Rod Elevator does not apply rotational torque to rod connections.

Its functions are to:

  • Lift the sucker rod
  • Suspend the rod string
  • Transfer axial load into the hoisting system
  • Support controlled running and pulling operations

Rod connection makeup and breakout must be performed with sucker rod tongs or another approved connection tool.

API 8C Product Positioning

The correct API classification is:

Sucker-Rod Elevators

Recommended product wording:

Manufactured to API Standard 8C, applicable current edition, at the specified Product Specification Level.

API Spec 8A is withdrawn and should not appear as the active manufacturing standard in:

  • Product title
  • H1
  • Specification table
  • API certificate description
  • Product marking
  • TDK
  • Product Schema

The API Monogram should only be referenced when:

  • Goldenman holds an active API 8C licence
  • The licensed scope includes Sucker-Rod Elevators
  • The individual model is manufactured under that scope
  • The specified PSL requirements are met
  • Applicable inspection, testing and marking are completed

Main Elevator Components

A typical SRE Sucker Rod Elevator can include:

  • Load-bearing elevator body
  • Front release lever
  • Rear release lever
  • Latch and locking mechanism
  • Size-specific rod plate
  • Plate-retaining components
  • Hinge or pivot components
  • Suspension interface
  • Load-bearing pins
  • Handles
  • Model and rated-load marking

The exact component arrangement must follow the current Goldenman assembly drawing.

Replaceable Rod Plates

Replaceable rod plates allow the elevator body to be configured for different rod diameters.

A correct plate must provide:

  • Proper opening diameter
  • Correct rod support geometry
  • Full seating in the elevator body
  • Secure retention
  • Adequate load-bearing area
  • Compatible release operation
  • Correct alignment with the rod

A rod plate should be identified by:

  • Elevator model
  • Rod diameter
  • Plate part number
  • Plate thickness
  • Internal profile
  • Load-contact dimensions
  • Drawing revision

Plates from SRE20 and SRE25 should not be considered interchangeable unless the Goldenman drawing explicitly confirms compatibility.

Rod Diameter and Lifting Interface

Nominal rod diameter alone is not always sufficient for elevator selection.

The purchaser should provide:

  • Sucker rod body diameter
  • Rod end or upset dimensions
  • Coupling diameter
  • Approved lifting position
  • Rod manufacturer
  • Rod grade
  • Rod-string configuration
  • Existing elevator and plate model

The elevator must engage the approved lifting area rather than:

  • Exposed rod threads
  • Damaged coupling edges
  • Corroded shoulders
  • Worn transitions
  • Welded repairs
  • Non-standard accessories
  • Unverified rod features

Sucker Rod Elevator vs Tubing Elevator

Comparison SRE Sucker Rod Elevator Tubing Elevator
Main tubular Sucker rod Production or workover tubing
Typical size Small rod diameters Larger tubing and coupling diameters
Load interface Rod-specific plate and lifting profile Tubing coupling, shoulder or slips
Rated-load range 20–25 short tons in this series Commonly higher
Main application Rod-string running and pulling Tubing-string running and pulling
Interchangeability Not interchangeable Not interchangeable

A Tubing Elevator should not be used for sucker rods simply because its bore is large enough.

The support geometry and load-transfer method are different.

Sucker Rod Elevator vs Sucker Rod Hook

A Sucker Rod Elevator and Sucker Rod Hook perform different functions.

Sucker Rod Elevator

The elevator closes around and directly supports the sucker rod using the correct plate.

Sucker Rod Hook

The hook forms part of the upper hoisting arrangement and supports the elevator or approved rod-handling equipment.

The hook, elevator and any connecting components must have compatible:

  • Rated loads
  • Eye dimensions
  • Suspension geometry
  • Articulation
  • Product Specification Levels
  • Inspection status

The complete hoisting system is limited by its lowest-rated component.

Selecting the Correct Model

1. Confirm Rod Size

Identify every sucker rod diameter included in the well program.

Do not assume that one plate covers:

  • 5/8 and 3/4 in rods
  • 7/8 and 1 in rods
  • Standard rods and sinker bars
  • Steel and fiberglass rods
  • Different rod-end geometries

Each size must be verified individually.

2. Calculate Maximum Suspended Load

The selected rated load must exceed the maximum approved operating load while complying with the project’s load and safety requirements.

The review should include:

  • Rod quantity
  • Rod weight per length
  • Rod-string depth
  • Sinker bars
  • Rod guides and accessories
  • Pump components lifted with the string
  • Fluid and buoyancy conditions
  • Dynamic hoisting loads
  • Overpull
  • Stuck-rod contingency
  • Workover unit limits

The SRE25 should not be treated as a universal replacement for the SRE20 without checking size compatibility.

3. Confirm Plate Availability

For each rod size, confirm:

  • Plate part number
  • Internal profile
  • Plate material
  • Plate condition
  • Retaining components
  • Required spare quantity

A rig carrying several rod sizes should have clearly marked plates and a controlled storage system to prevent incorrect installation.

4. Verify Hook and Suspension Compatibility

Provide:

  • Sucker rod hook manufacturer
  • Hook model
  • Hook rated load
  • Suspension-eye dimensions
  • Existing elevator interface
  • Available articulation
  • Working height

A correctly rated elevator may still be unsuitable if the hook interface causes restricted movement or edge loading.

5. Select PSL 1 or PSL 2

The purchaser should state the required Product Specification Level.

The selected PSL affects applicable:

  • Design controls
  • Material traceability
  • Heat-treatment records
  • Inspection
  • NDE
  • Testing
  • Marking
  • Documentation

The quotation, nameplate and Certificate of Conformity should identify the applicable PSL where required.

Opening and Closing Operation

Before loading:

  1. Verify the elevator model and rated load.
  2. Install the correct rod plate.
  3. Inspect the body, latch, levers and plate.
  4. Open the elevator completely.
  5. Position it around the approved rod lifting area.
  6. Close the elevator.
  7. Confirm full latch and locking engagement.
  8. Raise the elevator slowly.
  9. Verify that the rod is correctly supported.

The elevator should not be loaded when:

  • The latch is partially engaged
  • The plate is not fully seated
  • The wrong rod plate is installed
  • The rod is supported on threads
  • A release lever is damaged
  • The body is misaligned
  • Foreign material prevents full closure

Preventing Rod Damage and Accidental Release

Unsafe lifting can result from:

  • Incorrect plate size
  • Worn plate profile
  • Incomplete latch engagement
  • Damaged release levers
  • Corroded rod shoulders
  • Side loading
  • Shock loading
  • Use above rated capacity
  • Mixed or unauthorized replacement parts
  • Unsupported field modification

To reduce risk:

  • Match the plate to the exact rod size
  • Inspect the plate and latch before every use
  • Transfer load gradually
  • Keep the rod vertically aligned
  • Avoid impact loading
  • Keep personnel clear of the suspended string
  • Remove damaged equipment from service
  • Follow the Goldenman operation manual and site procedure

Inspection Before Each Use

Inspect:

  • Elevator body
  • Rod plate
  • Plate-retaining parts
  • Front release lever
  • Rear release lever
  • Latch
  • Locking mechanism
  • Hinge or pivot
  • Suspension area
  • Load-bearing pins
  • Handles
  • Product markings
  • Rated-load marking
  • PSL marking where applicable

Remove the elevator from service when there is evidence of:

  • Cracks
  • Permanent deformation
  • Excessive plate wear
  • Damaged latch engagement
  • Elongated pin holes
  • Loose components
  • Severe corrosion
  • Heat damage
  • Unauthorized welding
  • Illegible model or load markings

Maintenance and Storage

Routine maintenance can include:

  • Removing oil, mud and debris
  • Cleaning the plate pocket
  • Inspecting plate contact surfaces
  • Checking latch movement
  • Lubricating approved pivot points
  • Inspecting pins and retainers
  • Protecting machined surfaces
  • Applying corrosion protection
  • Keeping matched plates labeled
  • Recording inspection and repair history

Do not grind or enlarge the plate opening to fit another rod size.

Any repair to load-bearing components must follow an approved engineering and inspection procedure.

Replacement Compatibility

A replacement SRE Elevator should not be ordered using only “20 ton” or “25 ton.”

Provide:

  • Existing manufacturer
  • Model
  • Serial number
  • Rated load
  • PSL
  • Rod sizes
  • Plate part numbers
  • Body dimensions
  • Suspension-interface dimensions
  • Hook model
  • Existing drawing

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this page for one Sucker Rod Elevator model?

No.

It covers both SRE20 and SRE25.

SRE20 provides a 20-short-ton rated load and a broader 1/2–1-1/2 in size range. SRE25 provides a 25-short-ton rated load for 5/8–1 in rod sizes.

Should the product be specified to API 8A or API 8C?

New Sucker Rod Elevators should be specified according to the applicable current edition of API Standard 8C.

API Spec 8A is withdrawn and should not be presented as the active API Monogram standard.

Are 20 and 25 short tons torque values?

No.

They are rated-load values. A Sucker Rod Elevator is a hoisting tool and does not apply connection torque.

Can one SRE20 plate handle every rod size from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches?

No.

The complete SRE20 family offers plates for those sizes. Each rod diameter requires the correctly sized and approved plate.

Can SRE20 plates be installed in an SRE25 body?

Not automatically.

The plate pocket, retaining arrangement, load rating and body geometry must be checked against the Goldenman drawings.

Why does SRE25 cover fewer rod sizes than SRE20?

The two models use different rated-load and body configurations.

The higher SRE25 load rating does not mean it is intended for every size supported by the SRE20.

Can this elevator lift tubing?

No, unless a separate approved design specifically qualifies it for that tubular.

Sucker rod and tubing elevators use different load interfaces and product configurations.

Can the elevator support the rod on exposed threads?

No.

The elevator and plate must engage the approved lifting profile. Threads and damaged rod ends should not be used as the primary load-bearing surface.

What should be checked when the elevator does not close fully?

Check:

  • Correct rod plate
  • Plate seating
  • Rod diameter
  • Latch condition
  • Hinge alignment
  • Dirt or debris
  • Damaged body components

Do not apply load until full closure and locking are confirmed.

Should a worn rod plate be repaired by enlarging or machining the opening?

No.

Unapproved machining changes the lifting geometry and remaining load-bearing section. Replace the plate with the correct approved component.

Can one elevator from a matched hoisting system be replaced without checking the hook?

The replacement elevator’s suspension interface must be checked against the existing hook or connecting equipment.

Rated load alone does not confirm interface compatibility.
