Description

Goldenman BOP Stack Connection Equipment

Goldenman supplies drilling spools and adapter-flange solutions for connecting BOP stacks, wellhead equipment and drilling pressure-control components where bore size, pressure class, end connection, stack height or side-outlet requirements must be matched to the actual rig configuration.

The current Goldenman product range covers nominal bores from 7-1/16 to 13-5/8 inches and rated working pressures from 3,000 to 15,000 psi (approximately 20.7 to 103.4 MPa) for this product family. Upper and lower connections, ring grooves, face-to-face length, side outlets, material requirements and sour-service conditions are configured from the approved stack drawing.

For a replacement or crossover application, send the existing BOP and wellhead connection details rather than ordering by bore and pressure alone.

Quick answer: Use a drilling spool when the BOP stack needs pressure-containing vertical spacing, side access for choke/kill/circulation/test lines, or a controlled transition between stack components. Use an adapter flange or crossover connection when the main requirement is to transition between two different mating connections with minimum added stack height. Final selection is based on both upper and lower interfaces, not on nominal bore alone.
Pressure-control equipment notice: The rated working pressure of a drilling spool assembly is limited by the lowest-rated integral end or outlet connection. Final design, pressure rating, material, bolting, ring groove, test pressure and acceptance criteria must follow the applicable current API requirements, approved manufacturing drawing and purchaser specification.

Product Short Description

Goldenman API drilling spools are pressure-containing bodies installed between BOPs, wellhead equipment or other drill-through pressure-control components. They can provide equal or different upper/lower connections and two or four side outlets for kill, choke, circulation, pressure monitoring or test service. Adapter-flange and crossover configurations are used when mating equipment has different connection geometry, bore size or pressure-class requirements.

The product is supplied as an order-specific connection component. Bore, upper and lower connections, outlet arrangement, ring grooves, face-to-face dimension and service environment are confirmed from the actual BOP stack and wellhead interface before manufacturing.

Common BOP and Wellhead Connection Configurations

The same “drilling spool” name can describe very different stack functions. Define what the upper and lower equipment actually are before selecting the product.

Stack Situation Connection Requirement Typical Solution
BOP and wellhead have the same bore and compatible end connections Pressure spacing and side access Equal-bore drilling spool
BOP bore and wellhead bore differ Bore transition plus pressure-compatible upper/lower ends Combination-bore drilling spool
Connection geometry differs but extra side outlets are not required Compact interface transition Adapter flange / crossover connector
BOP stack requires choke, kill or circulation access Pressure-rated side outlets Drilling spool with two or four outlets
Existing stack requires additional vertical clearance Defined face-to-face length Spacer/drilling spool configuration
API 16A BOP equipment meets an API 6A wellhead connection Both interfaces must be fully specified Engineered spool or crossover solution according to actual mating connections

Common Goldenman Drilling Spool Bore and Pressure Combinations

Goldenman’s broader drilling-spool range currently publishes the following common bore and pressure combinations. These are useful RFQ references; final upper/lower flange or studded-end details still require an approved drawing.

Nominal Bore Published Common Pressure Classes Application Note
7-1/16 in 3,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 psi Common compact BOP-stack bore; compatible equipment details must be checked
9 in 3,000 / 5,000 psi Project-specific stack transition
11 in 3,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 psi Widely used wellhead/BOP-stack connection size
13-5/8 in 3,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 psi Large-bore BOP/wellhead interface; check stack weight and flange arrangement
About 15,000 psi configurations: The current Goldenman product page states an overall product-family range up to 15,000 psi. The published common-combination table on Goldenman’s related drilling-spool page lists specific 7-1/16, 9, 11 and 13-5/8 in combinations through 10,000 psi. Therefore, any 15,000 psi configuration should be quoted and documented from the approved project-specific design rather than assumed from the common-combination table.

API 16A Drilling Spool vs API 6A Wellhead Connector: Where Is the Boundary?

API Spec 16A covers drill-through well-control equipment, including drilling-spool product functions within the BOP stack. API Spec 6A covers wellhead and tree equipment and includes wellhead connectors, crossover connectors, adapter/spacer connectors and related pressure-containing equipment.

A real installation can place an API 16A drilling-spool function directly above an API 6A wellhead connection. For that reason, the purchase description should identify both mating pieces rather than simply saying “API flange.” Goldenman reviews the upper and lower equipment, nominal bore, rated pressure, end connection, ring groove, bolting and stack height before finalizing the connection drawing.

Need to Match API 6A and API 16A Equipment?

Send the BOP stack drawing and wellhead top-connection drawing. Goldenman can review the mating interface and propose a drilling spool, crossover or adapter configuration for quotation.

Upper, Lower and Side-Outlet Connection Options

The connection drawing is the most important document for a drilling spool or adapter. A correct RFQ defines every pressure boundary connection individually.

Connection Item Information to Specify
Upper End Mating equipment, nominal bore, rated pressure, flanged/studded type, ring groove and bolting
Lower End Mating equipment, nominal bore, rated pressure, flanged/studded type, ring groove and bolting
Side Outlet 1 Size, pressure, connection type and service function
Side Outlet 2 / 3 / 4 Same information for each outlet; do not assume all outlets are identical
Face-to-Face Height Required stack height and available installation clearance
Through Bore Full/reduced bore requirement and any drift/clearance requirement

Flange, Ring Groove and Gasket Compatibility

A nominal bore and pressure rating do not fully define a mating connection. The flange or studded-end family, ring groove, ring number and bolting must agree with the adjacent equipment. Where the wellhead side uses API 6A 6B/6BX connectors, the mating connector must be selected from the actual API 6A connection definition. Where the BOP side uses an API 16A connector, the applicable API 16A geometry and rating apply.

The original Goldenman page specifies corrosion-resistant alloy treatment in the ring-groove/flange sealing area. This can be retained as an H₂S/corrosion-service option, but final alloy selection, inlay procedure and acceptance criteria must be stated on the order-specific manufacturing document.

Do not order an adapter by “7-1/16 10K” alone. Provide the exact upper and lower connector descriptions, ring-groove information and the mating equipment drawings. Two pressure-control components with the same bore and pressure can still have incompatible connection geometry.

Side Outlets for Choke, Kill, Circulation and Test Service

A drilling spool can provide two or four side outlets when the BOP stack layout requires dedicated pressure-control access. Goldenman’s broader drilling-spool range publishes common outlet sizes of 2-1/16, 2-9/16, 3-1/8 and 4-1/16 inches, with flanged, studded or threaded configurations according to the project.

The outlet pressure rating is critical because the rated working pressure of the completed drilling spool is governed by the lowest-rated integral end or outlet connection. Outlet size and orientation should be coordinated with the API 16C choke and kill manifold, choke/kill lines and rig piping layout rather than selected independently.

Material, Temperature and H₂S Service

“H₂S Trim” is not a complete sour-service purchase specification. For an API 16A drilling spool, Goldenman requires the actual environment and project material requirements so the pressure-containing body, bolting, sealing surfaces and any corrosion-resistant inlay can be selected correctly.

Pressure-Containing Material Specified according to bore, pressure, design requirement and service environment.
Temperature Range Provide minimum ambient and maximum well-fluid temperatures for the installation.
H₂S / Sour Service Provide H₂S partial pressure or project sour-service requirement and applicable NACE/ISO material requirements.
Bolting Pressure-control bolting is selected and documented according to the applicable API requirements and service environment.
Ring-Groove Inlay CRA inlay/overlay available when specified for corrosion or sour-service protection.
API 6A Mating Equipment If the adapter interfaces with an API 6A wellhead, also provide the wellhead material class and relevant API 6A quality/performance requirements shown on its approved datasheet.

Manufacturing, Inspection and Documentation

The inspection package is defined by the applicable API product scope, pressure class, material, service and purchase order. Goldenman can prepare project documentation for technical review and third-party inspection.

Inspection / Record Typical Project Purpose
Material Certificates / Traceability Links pressure-containing components to heat and material records
Heat-Treatment Records Documents controlled material processing where applicable
Dimensional Inspection Confirms bore, connection, outlet, face-to-face and drawing dimensions
NDE Records Documents required examination of pressure-containing material and finished surfaces
Ring-Groove / Sealing-Surface Inspection Verifies the pressure-sealing connection interface
Hydrostatic Pressure-Test Record Documents pressure-boundary test results according to the applicable procedure
General Arrangement Drawing Shows actual overall dimensions, interfaces and outlet locations
Third-Party Inspection Available when required by the purchaser or project specification

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a drilling spool used for in a BOP stack?

A drilling spool is a pressure-containing spool installed within or below the BOP stack to provide vertical spacing, equal or different upper/lower connections and pressure-rated side outlets for choke, kill, circulation, monitoring or test service.

What is the difference between a drilling spool and an adapter flange?

A drilling spool normally adds stack height and can provide side outlets. An adapter flange or crossover connector is primarily used to transition between two mating connection configurations when a more compact interface is required.

Can a drilling spool connect a BOP to an API 6A wellhead?

Yes, when the complete upper and lower interfaces are engineered and documented for the actual BOP and wellhead connections. The BOP-side and wellhead-side requirements must be identified separately.

Can the upper and lower connections have different sizes?

Yes. Combination-bore drilling spools and crossover/adapter configurations can be designed with different upper and lower interfaces. Final dimensions and pressure ratings must be shown on the approved drawing.

Can the upper and lower connections have different pressure ratings?

Different mating connection classes can be incorporated in an engineered crossover configuration, but the rated working pressure of the completed pressure-containing assembly is limited by the lowest-rated integral connection or outlet.

Can a drilling spool include choke and kill outlets?

Yes. Goldenman’s broader drilling-spool range includes two- and four-outlet arrangements. Outlet size, pressure class, end connection and orientation must be coordinated with the approved well-control piping and manifold system.

Is 15,000 psi available for this product?

The current Goldenman product page lists an overall range up to 15,000 psi. Specific 15,000 psi bore and connection combinations should be confirmed from an order-specific design and quotation rather than assumed from the common 3K–10K configuration table.

How do I match the correct ring groove and gasket?

Provide the exact mating connection, nominal bore, rated pressure, connector family and existing ring-groove or ring-number information. Do not select a ring gasket from nominal bore alone.

What information is required for H₂S service?

Provide the project sour-service requirement, H₂S/CO₂ conditions, temperature, fluid environment, required material standard and bolting requirements. Goldenman will select the body, bolting and corrosion-resistant sealing-surface requirements accordingly.

What documents can be supplied with a drilling spool?

The ordered data package can include general arrangement drawings, material certificates, heat-treatment records, dimensional inspection, NDE reports, pressure-test records, product traceability, applicable API documentation and third-party inspection records.

What should I send for a replacement drilling spool?

Send the existing nameplate, manufacturer/model, bore, pressure, upper/lower connection details, outlet arrangement, face-to-face height, ring-groove information, overall dimensions, photographs and the existing BOP-stack or wellhead drawing.
