What Is API 5DP Drill Pipe?

Drill pipe is a tubular drillstring component consisting of a steel pipe body and weld-on tool joints.

Connected lengths of drill pipe form the main section of the drillstring and perform three critical functions:

  • Transmit rotary torque to the bottom-hole assembly
  • Carry axial and tensile loads during drilling and tripping
  • Provide an internal flow path for drilling fluid

API Spec 5DP covers drill pipe bodies, tool joints and complete drill pipe assemblies. The API Monogram licensing scope separately identifies these three product categories.

Tool joint OD, pin ID, bevel diameter and torsion ratio vary by steel grade and connection. The final dimensional table should be included in the approved order datasheet.

Drill Pipe Grade Selection

E75 Drill Pipe

E75 is generally selected for drilling programs with moderate tensile and torsional requirements.

It may be suitable where:

  • Well depth is moderate
  • Drillstring loads are comparatively lower
  • High-strength grades are not required
  • Lower equipment weight and cost are important
  • The drilling program permits a wider strength margin at the connection

The final selection should still be verified through drillstring load analysis.

X95 Drill Pipe

X95 provides a higher-strength option than E75 and may be selected when additional tensile capacity is required without moving directly to G105 or S135.

S135 Drill Pipe

However, selecting S135 does not automatically increase the capacity of the complete drillstring. The tool joint, connection and torsion ratio must also be checked.

A high-strength pipe body combined with an undersized tool joint can make the tool joint the limiting component.

How to Select the Correct Drill Pipe

1. Confirm Pipe Size and Nominal Weight

Nominal OD and wall thickness affect:

  • Internal flow area
  • Tensile capacity
  • Torsional capacity
  • Drillstring weight
  • Annular clearance
  • Fishing and handling requirements

A heavier nominal weight normally provides a thicker pipe wall but reduces internal flow area.

2. Select the Appropriate Steel Grade

Common Drill Pipe Procurement Mistakes

Selecting Only by OD and Grade

A description such as “5-inch S135 drill pipe” is incomplete. Nominal weight, upset, connection, tool joint OD, pin ID and length must also be confirmed.

Assuming All NC Connections Are Identical

Connection designation alone does not define the complete tool joint geometry.

Ignoring Torsion Ratio

A higher pipe grade may not improve usable drilling torque when the tool joint remains the limiting component.

Mixing Drill Pipe Without Dimensional Verification

Drill pipe from different suppliers or production batches should not be assumed interchangeable, only because the nominal size and connection are the same.

Confusing S135 with Sour Service

S135 identifies a high-strength drill pipe grade. It does not mean that the product is automatically suitable for H₂S service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should buyers choose between E75, X95, G105 and S135 drill pipe?

The grade should be selected from the calculated tensile load, expected drilling torque, well depth, trajectory and fatigue exposure.

E75 may be adequate for moderate loads, while X95, G105 and S135 provide progressively higher pipe-body strength. However, the complete drill pipe assembly must be checked because the tool joint or connection may become the limiting component.

Does S135 mean the drill pipe is suitable for sour service?

No. S135 is a high-strength drill pipe grade and is not the same as a sour-service designation.

API licensing information identifies high-strength grades such as X, G and S separately from SS sour-service grades. For an H₂S well, the buyer must specify the actual sour-service requirements, H₂S exposure, temperature and applicable material restrictions.

Can two drill pipes with the same NC50 connection be used interchangeably?

Not automatically.

Both products may use NC50 threads but have different tool joint OD, pin ID, bevel diameter, tong-space length, upset geometry or torsion ratio. These dimensions should be compared before mixing the products in one drillstring.

Why can the torsion ratio be below 1.0?

A ratio below 1.0 indicates that the calculated tool joint torsional capacity is lower than the pipe-body torsional capacity for that configuration.

This does not automatically make the drill pipe unsuitable, but it means the connection and tool joint may determine the allowable operating torque.

How should NC46 and NC50 drill pipe be selected for 4-1/2-inch pipe?

The selection should consider the existing drillstring connection, required torque, tool joint OD, internal flow area and available annular clearance.

NC50 can provide a larger connection configuration, but its larger tool joint dimensions may affect casing clearance and hydraulic performance. The final choice should be based on the complete drillstring design.

What information is required to replace the existing drill pipe?
