What is a Choke Manifold

A choke manifold is a combination of multiple pipes that are mainly used for well blowout control and oil and gas well pressure control. It is a supporting device of hydraulic blowout preventer for drilling, and one of the main equipments for controlling blowout, balancing the drilling process and restoring the pressure of oil and gas wells. The main components of the throttle manifold include throttle valve, gate valve, tubing, tubing fittings, pressure gauge, etc. The throttle valve is the most important component in the throttle manifold.

Control of fluid pressure in the well: under the condition of blowout preventer closure, the opening and closing of the throttle valve is utilized to control a certain amount of pressure in the casing to maintain the bottomhole pressure always slightly greater than the formation pressure, avoiding further inflow of formation fluids into the well. This helps to maintain the balance between bottomhole pressure and formation pressure and keep it constant to stop overflow.

Implementing Pressurization: By throttling the flow of fluids out of the wellhead through the throttling valves, a pressurization operation is implemented to control the flow of fluids out of the wellhead, control the wellhead backpressure (stand pressure and casing pressure), replace the contaminated mud in the well, and restore the pressure control of the mud column to the bottom of the well.

Soft shutdown: When shutting down the well, the throttling manifold can reduce the wellhead pressure through the pressure relief effect of the throttling valve, realizing “soft shutdown” and reducing the impact on the wellhead equipment when shutting down the well.

Protecting wellhead equipment: When the pressure inside the well rises to a certain limit, the overflow will be led out of the wellsite through the large amount of relief effect of the release valve on the throttle manifold, preventing the wellsite from catching fire and poisoning the personnel, ensuring the safety of the operation and protecting the blowout preventer set.

Responding to emergencies: In emergencies such as blowouts, the throttling manifold can be used to inject water or extinguishing agent into the wellbore to control the fire or assist in extinguishing the fire.
